PRESS RELEASE: Local runners take on the world

A Cottesloe running club are taking on the world’s best in the Perth 2016 World Masters Athletics Championships from 26 October to 6 November.

Six members of the WRC (Wednesday Running Club) will run in the half marathon event at the championships including Cottesloe residents Michael Edward Bowles (45) , Tony Grist (54), Dominic Goodwin (50), Luke Hanley (45) as well as Keegan Crage (38) from Peppermint Grove and Eric Carles (45) from North Fremantle.

The group run each Wednesday from the Cottesloe carpark to the Fremantle Surf Club.

Mr Grist said the event is a fantastic opportunity to represent Australia while competing with friends.

“Well clearly at the ripe old age of 54 there aren’t many chances to wear the green and gold in your own town so this is ideal.

“Aside from that it’s all about having fun with mates and earning that beer – like a drinking group with a running habit,” said Mr Grist.

“The opportunity to represent Australia in a professionally run, world-class sporting event, with my mates was too good to pass up,” said Mr Hanley.

The event will see over 4,000 athletes and 3,000 spectators descend on Perth. Over 80 countries are already confirmed to attend.

Anyone over the age of 35 can take part in the event with the only entry requirements being that participants must wear your country’s uniform and be signed up with a temporary Masters Athletics Membership.

Events include half marathon and marathon, 8km cross country and track and field events.

The championships will be held at various locations including the WA Athletics Stadium in Mt Claremont and Ern Clark Athletic Centre in Cannington. Non-stadia events will be run at Burswood and Perry Lakes.

Participant entries for Perth 2016 close 25 August. All information can be found at
