PRESS RELEASE: The oldest sprint in the world
Six athletes over ninety years of age will line up for the 100m sprint today in the World Masters Athletics Championships at WA Athletics Stadium.
The M90-99 age group includes WA legend Arthur Carbon (96) plus fellow Australians James ‘Jimmy’ Sinclair (92) and Maurice Dauphinet (90).
Carbon, a former solider and wharf worker has been training for a month in the lead-up to the race. Carbon will be cheered on by a home crowd, which will include grand daughter and former Australian Hockey Player, Sally Carbon.
At the other end of the age scale, defending 100m and 200m M40 Masters champ TJ Ossai will be vying to retain his titles.
The gun sprinter posted an exceptional time of 10.81 in his preliminary and cruised through with a semi-final time of 10.85 on Friday evening.
The 100m finals will start with the M90-99 race at 12.45pm, concluding with the M35 at 1.45pm.
