PRESS RELEASE: Gilmour’s last laps
Written by Kirsty Kennedy
97 year old John Gilmour will be running his last races dubbed the ‘last laps’ at the World Masters Athletics Championships in Perth this Saturday, the 5th of November.
The running legend has come out of retirement for the 4th time to run the 400m and the 1500m races in the 95-99 age category.
Gilmour won gold in the men’s 95-99 800m run on Friday, finishing with a smashing time of 9 minute and 19.93 seconds.
The inspirational runner said that despite his age, the atmosphere of the competition keeps him going, as well as the prospect of meeting up with old friends and competitors.
“As you get older you always deteriorate in your achievements, but you always have the ambition to do as well as you did last time, and that’s the beauty of Masters Athletics”, said Gilmour.
Gilmour’s last races will certainly be a challenge, with the temperature forecasted to reach 35 degrees on Saturday, but this won’t stop him from doing his best.
To watch the races as a free spectator head down to the W.A Athletics Centre on Saturday at 10.25am for the 1500m race and 2.20pm for the 400m.
