PRESS RELEASE: Masters master confirms he’s ready to run
The oldest athlete in the World Masters Athletics Championships had confirmed he is a starter in the 800m event today at WA Athletics Stadium.
John Gilmour, 97, has come out of retirement to go for gold in front of his home crowd and will go up against younger rival, 96 year old Arthur Carbon, and Romanian sensation Dumitru Radu, 90.
Gilmour said he was in good form and was up early stretching and preparing on the track he made around his house.
The hall of fame inductee was also a champion runner in his youth but returned home a physical wreck after suffering three years as a POW in Japan. In 1969, aged 50, he began competing as a veteran/Masters athlete and went on to set numerous world age records and win more than sixty international races.
The M90-99 race will start at 4pm today, Friday October 28, at the WA Athletics Stadium in Mt Claremont, Perth.
